RESEARCH AND
DEVELOPMENT
COSCO has long considered innovation to be a major
driving force towards greater efficiency, enhanced
productivity, and higher quality standards. We
position ourselves to be more competitive in the ever-
changing maritime industry through constant renewal
and refinement of our technological capabilities. Our
goal of continuously enhancing our tried-and-tested
competencies in modern shipbuilding and marine
engineering requires groundbreaking solutions garnered
from our rigorous research and development efforts.
Leading our research and development initiative is
COSCO Shipyard Technology Centre, comprising
over 1,600 designated staff deployed across satellite
offices at COSCO Shipyard headquarters and
various shipyards. The Group is engaged in research
and development of oil and gas related products
and technologies, as well as undertaking design of
specialised vessels and marine engineering products.
Our R&D Centres in Nantong and Qidong principally
conduct design of offshore marine engineering projects
such as cylindrical rigs, semi-submersible rigs, FPSOs,
and wind turbine installation vessels. COSCO’s team
at the Dalian Shipyard Technology Centre primarily
conducts design work for FPSO conversion, jack-up
rigs, LNG carriers, module carriers, product tankers,
and PSV, among other major product types.
Technology centres in Zhoushan and Guangdong also
carry out production design for various engineering
projects. Our enterprise supporting teams work in
tandem with all shipyards to carry out product design
of complementary products such as jack-up drilling
platform’s lift system and single-point mooring systems.
R&D ENDEAVOURS
2015 saw COSCO’s R&D team refine its capabilities.
Collaborations with reputable institutions were initiated
to fast-track design and technological developments.
These partnerships are an important part of COSCO’s
R&D efforts.
Despite volatile global market conditions and
challenging business situations, COSCO was able to
successfully deliver projects and secure contracts for
new vessel types.
COSCO Nantong delivered in January, a semi-
submersible offshore accommodation vessel to its
Mexican buyer, Cotemar. Capable of accommodating
a crew of 990, it is one of the biggest offshore
accommodation units. COSCO Shipyard had
